Belief Coaching for Money

Problem/challenge: Nancy didn’t have enough money coming in

Old Belief: “I had to be perfect.”
New Beliefs:
– “I was good enough just the way I was.”
– “I don’t need to be perfect.”
– “I can just be me.”
– “I can come up with a way to make money.”
– “I just need to reinvent myself.”
– “I’ll be fine.”

Nancy participated in a Belief Coaching session because she wanted to change the way she felt about her money situation. A single parent, she had two kids in college, she hadn’t worked at a regular job in almost a year, and she felt afraid. She didn’t know what to do; she was frozen with fear. A decade earlier, Nancy had put away enough money to send both kids to college and fund her own retirement. When the stock market suddenly took a downturn, Nancy’s nest egg evaporated. She felt ashamed, embarrassed and guilty.

I suggested that in order for her to feel ashamed, embarrassed and guilty– she would have to have a belief in her mind that prevented her from bringing in enough money to support her family. Nancy agreed. She recognized that she would tell herself “…it’s my fault” that the money evaporated, and “I could have done a better job” at managing it. Where did these beliefs come from? Nancy remembered a time when she was in kindergarten and her parents were trying to teach her how to spell. She kept misspelling the number four “f-o-r” and she sensed that she was disappointing both of her parents. She felt hopeless, and explained in a shaky voice that “I had to be perfect. I wasn’t going to be able to do anything of value to be what I want to be, and have what I want to have.”

During her Belief Coaching session, Nancy eventually realized that “I was good enough just the way I was. I don’t need to be perfect. I can just be me.” As she considered this new way of thinking, she quickly came to the conclusion “I can come up with a way to make money. I just need to reinvent myself. I’ll be fine,”  she said confidently. After the session had ended, Nancy shared that she felt “…as if a big weight was lifted off of my shoulders, instead of a huge boulder weighing me down. I feel lighter!”
