Problem/challenge: Sophia wasn’t standing out when it came to job interviews
Old Beliefs:
– “I must not be interesting enough.”
– “I don’t want to stand out. “I want to be like everyone else.”
– “I want to stand out and get noticed.”
– “It’s selfish to stand out.”
New Beliefs:
– “I have what it takes.”
– “I am my own person.”
– “I don’t need to be the centre of attention, but sometimes it’s okay to stand out.”
– “It’s not selfish to stand out, it’s being true to yourself.”
Sophia decided to participate in a Belief Coaching session because she felt stuck in her career and lack of job prospects. She couldn’t figure out why she wasn’t standing out when it came to job interviews. She knew that she had more than enough experience and education to do the jobs for which she applied, but for some reason she wasn’t standing out. She felt insignificant.
Sophia often told herself: “Don’t stand out to draw too much attention to yourself. Stay at the back of the crowd so you won’t be mocked.” Where did she get these ideas? Sophia recalled an incident from childhood when she was in school and mistakenly called her teacher “mom”. All of her classmates laughed. Sophia felt extremely embarrassed. From that point on, she realized that she became extremely hard on herself, and would sometimes tell herself: “I am an idiot” or “That was dumb”. This made her self-critical to the point where she would pressure herself to “…focus, pay attention, get it right”.
During her Belief Coaching session, I pointed out to Sophia that in addition to her belief “I must not be…interesting enough”, she had three conflicting beliefs that were keeping her stuck:
– “I don’t want to stand out. “I want to be like everyone else.”
– “I want to stand out and get noticed.”
– “It’s selfish to stand out.”
Eventually, Sophia realized:
– “I have what it takes.”
– “I am my own person.”
– “I don’t need to be the centre of attention, but sometimes it’s okay to stand out.”
– “It’s not selfish to stand out, it’s being true to yourself.”
Once she adopted these new beliefs, Sophia noticed: “Something feels lighter in my chest area. I can breathe deeper.” She also realized just how far she had come. She said that after our first session she noticed that she “…didn’t need people’s approval as much” and “When you change yourself to please others you feel tired; it’s exhausting.” She now felt “…that’s a load off”!
